Pictures of Our Recent Practice Day
What a great day in the fall to run an old stockcar!

Line'em up guys and gals!...Let's see what you got....

Coming out of turn two with sun in their eyes... just keep'em straight and coming on!

That really is two Hudson Hornets out there on the track in the year 2009.
They were very popular back in the fifties on the sands of Daytona too!

Notice: A suspect hopped into this 49 Ford and took off like he stole it.
This male is believed to hale from Cleveland County, NC and favors the former GN driver  remembered as Tiny Lund.

And there was time for some ride-a-longs for the young.

There was time to eat and talk about the nice day.

Rick Earnhardt in the #27 Chevelle took the early lead from the pole. Joe Evans in the #550 got around Rick about lap 2 and lead several laps with Earnhardt in second and Doug Howell's #28 Chevelle running right behind in third. Evans pulled away a couple car lengths from Earnhardt opening up the door for Howell to move into 2nd.  Several more laps pass with Evans getting side by side challenges with Howell . Then on lap 14, Evans in the lead, spun out in turn 1 in from of Howell bringing.out the first caution flag of the season for the Carolina Vintage Racers. During the caution, Evans was able to restart at the rear of the field while drivers Earnhardt and Raymond Sams in the #44 Ford Coupe were able to pull right up for the restart. When the green flew for the final six laps, Evans was coming hard to try for that 6 cylinder trophy. On the last lap Howell was just ahead of Earnhardt on the low side and Sams on the high side. Evans made a bonzi move under Earnhardt (three wide) in turn 4 almost on the flat part of the track. Earnhardt doesn't see him down low and fenders and quarter panels come together with Earnhardt and Evans turned and stopped on the track as the checker flag falls to Howell with Sams second, for his best finish in CVSC racing

Raymond Sams from Shelby, NC gets his first trophy in Vintage racing winning the 6-cylinder class in his '49 Ford Coupe.

Race #2
The Carolina Vintage Stock cars unloaded at Caraway Speedway Saturday night, June 13th, on "Faster Paster Nite" to run their 20-lap feature.

Trouble started early for Wayne Hearne's '56 Chevy, when his motor started to seize up during one of the practice sessions. Wayne had to sit out for the feature, knowing that he couldn't keep his winning streak going from two wins there last year.
A first-timer for Vintage racing, Black Cat Racing brought out a quality-built Mercury Comet for driver Susan Kimel from Pinnacle, NC. After some issues were found in practice, the #67 Comet was ready to pounce on the competion.
Howard Scruggs had some oiling problems on his Hudson Hornet but was able to run for the six cylinder trophy after dark.
Rick Earnhardt from just up the road in Mt. Pleasant drew the pole for night with the '49 Ford Coupe of Raymond Sams from Shelby along side.

Starting lineup:
1st row: Rick Earnhardt '64 Chevelle #27         Raymond Sams '49 Ford Coupe #44

2nd row: Joe Evans '57 Chevy Belair #550           Howard Scruggs '51 Hudson Hornet

3rd row: Susan Kimel '65 Mercury Comet #67          Doug Howell '65 Chevelle #28

                  Wayne Hearne '56 Chevy 210 #3 (DNS)

After a quick start to make sure that distant weather would not play a part in the night's racing, Rick Earnhardt led the first two circuits before the two V8's starting at the back came thru the pack to battle back and forth for the lead. The group ran green to checkers, with Susan Kimel in the lead, when lapped cars on the last lap kept Doug Howell from making one last attempt at the win. With not even a tire mark on her new car, Susan, the Kimel family and Black Cat Racing crew all celebrated in Victory Circle on their first night out.
Joe Evans outlasted the other 6 cylinders in his original '57 Chevy #550, "Bessie," to grab another trophy for his collection.

Finish: 1. Susan Kimel            2. Doug Howell
             3. Joe Evans               4. Rick Earnhardt
             5. Raymond Sams      6. Howard Scruggs

Caraway Speedway Carolina Vintage Winner - June 13th 09 Sue Kimel in her MERCURY

After 3 years restoring Susan's first racecar, this 65 Mercury Comet, wins the first time out, and for the driver, her last race was in 1992.
