Cleveland County Speedway Winner  -   Butch Barker

CLEVELAND COUNTY SPEEDWAY in Lawndale, NC invited a select few of dirt racers from the Carolina Vintage Club to take part in the 2nd annual Preston Humphries Memorial Race. The drivers got to talk with the family of the popular short track driver that lost his life in a multi-car pile-up at Metrolina Speedway. The drivers took to the track and found that the long straights made for a quick race with an early lead taken by Raymond Sams.  Raymond in his '49 Ford Coupe broke a rear shock while leading and spun to the inside. After the restart, Butch Barker in his '50 Chevrolet Business coupe held on to win over Hutch Holiday's '55 Chevy making his first full race. Howard Scruggs had his '51 Hudson Hornet running strong came home third gaining that dirt track practice for the following nite's race..

Finishing Order:
1. Butch Baker
  2. Hutch Holiday

At Tri-County Motor Speedway the CVSC had the most cars at this event than any other events thus far this season.
There were two new cars that arrived for the race for the first time this year.

Rick Earnhardt returned to the track with his freshly built 1962 Ford Falcon powered by a 6-Cyl. engine. Rick ran the whole race to finish in 7th place. After a few adjustments and a new paint job, this Falcon should resemble the #8 Falcon run by Dale Earnhardt in his first years in racing.

This 1955 Chevy powered by a V8 engine made its debut on the track piloted by Hutch Holiday, a first time racer. The car resembles a car driven by a local racer in the Shelby, NC area. This car had a tire rub and was unable to complete the entire race.

V-8 Winner

Finally Ed Ritchey in his '65 Impala wins for the first time of his CVSC career. After four years of racing, Ed powered to the front and battled to stay in the lead and held back Fuzzy Bogue in the #67 '65 Comet substituting for Susan Kimel. During the race, Ed and the leaders had to maneuver through the lap traffic and dodged ailing cars for 25 laps.

6-Cyl. Winner

Joe Evans in his '57 Chevy wins another 6-Cyl trophy at the famous Hickory Motor Speedway. So far this season Joe has a perfect record, taking home all of the 6-Cyl wins. Are there any contenders out there?

The 25 lap feature saw many cars have trouble and had to retire early. Howard Scruggs blew a hole in the side of his origin Hudson Hornet engine on lap 5. On lap 10, Wayne Poplin in the '56 Ford pulled in due to fuel pickup problems, report is that the foam in the fuel cell was deteriorating and clogging up the fuel filter. Later on lap 17, Jim Ivey in the '65 Galaxy stopped due to overheating. On lap 21, Wayne Hearne parked his '56 Chevy after laps of burning up his rear-end.

Susan Kimel wins the first race back at North Wilkesboro since its closure in 1996. Susan holds a mounted piece of the Junior Johnson Grandstand as a memorable trophy of the race track. She raced at North Wilkesboro Speedway in the 90's in special street stock fall invitation races.

6-Cylinder Winner

Joe Evans salutes the crowd after taking the win in the 6-cylinder class, also receiving a trophy made of the Junior Johnson Grandstand. I bet that's a new type of trophy he doesn't have in his case. Joe had to outrun his other 6-cylinder opponents, Wayne Hearne, Wayne Poplin and Howard Scruggs.
